Unpack Summer Travel Stress

Travel can be both exciting and exhausting, often leaving us in need of some serious recovery time. We partnered with WHOOP to study the impact of travel on your health and how we can help.

Our new study with WHOOP, a leading health and fitness wearable that tracks everything from activity, sleep, stress, and even travel, reveals that on average, it takes 5 days to catch up on lost sleep and 7 days to return to normal stress levels after a trip. Tips for a Healthier Travel Experience

Stay Hydrated: Flying at high altitudes with reduced oxygen and humidity makes air travel extremely dry. Try to drink a bottle of water for every hour you’re in the air. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, which can dehydrate you. Make sure to extend that hydration to your skin, too! Pack a light moisturizer in your carry-on (travel size, of course!) and apply it throughout the flight.

Dress Accordingly: No need for an in-air fashion show. Prioritize comfy clothes that will allow for optimum relaxation. Add some compression socks, too—they’re a great way to increase blood flow and reduce swelling.

Wear Sunscreen: Because you’re closer to the ozone layer, the UV rays on planes are intense. Even a one-hour flight can expose your skin to the same amount of UV radiation as a tanning bed! Apply sunscreen to stay protected and try to keep the window shut if you’re sitting in a window seat.

Prioritize Sleep: Use eye masks and earplugs to create a more restful environment on the plane. WHOOP can even make recommendations on optimal bed time and wake time based on how much sleep your body needs. Have trouble sleeping? Meditation can help reduce stress and put you in a calmer mindset, primed for sleep.

Move Around: Stretch and walk during long flights to keep your blood flowing and reduce muscle stiffness. If you arrive at your destination feeling exhausted, take a short 20- or 30-minute nap or exercise for a quick energy boost.
